The Nairobi City County Government has assured traders its commitment in promotion of trade in the city by improving the business environment and also construction of additional markets.
Construction of the New Wakulima market along Kangundo road is about 90% complete.
The market is being built by administration in conjunction with the national government.
It is expected to be completed and handed over to the county government later in the year.
The market has a capacity to host over 1,500 traders both wholesale and retail.
“My administration is also constructing Mwariro Market in Kariokor and Karandini Market in Dagoreti North Constituency,” said Governor Mike Sonko
Both projects are being undertaken by both the County and National governments.
In addition, the Nairobi City County Government has undertaken reconstruction and rehabilitation of the following markets.
City Park Market in Parklands,Makina Market in Kibra,Karen Market,Shauri Moyo(Burma market),Kahawa West Market
Construction of the Gikomba Market is at a very advanced stage by both the county and national governments.
The Contractor moved on site in November last year and foundation works are complete.
The market is going to be a 5-storey building that will accommodate over 500 traders,the works are due for completion by end of 2019.
“Furthermore,my administration is constructing a modern leather tooling facility at Kariokor Market,” added Sonko
The equipment in the facility was availed by the national government at a cost of Ksh 100m and is slated to be opened later this year.
Plans are also at an advanced stage to rehabilitate the following markets,Githurai Market,Ngara Market,Kariokor Market
