A Nairobi Court has ordered three suspected drug traffickers be detained for three days pending determination of their bail application.
Appearing before the Milimani Law Courts Magistrate Kenneth Cheruiyot, the three Simon Kariuki Wangeci, Hussein Nganga and Gabriel Mwangi denied all the charges .
They were accused that on April 20, 2019 in Githurai 44 in Kasarani within Nairobi County, jointly with others not before court, they were found trafficking 521,5 kilograms of cannabis (bhang)with a street value of Sh1,564,500.
They are further accused of selling the drugs to the students after outsourcing their commodities from neighboring countries of Ethiopia and Tanzania.
According to the police, Kariuki is rated among the top suppliers of bhang in Nairobi and Kiambu Counties.
The prosecution says that the three were nabbed while packing the bhang.
Through their lawyer Danson Omari, the three pleaded with the court to be released on bail on the grounds they are family men who needed to take their children to school.
“The suspects are still innocent until proven guilty and there are no compelling reasons to deny them bail,” said Omari.
Omari told the court that the accused are from slums in Githurai and that they should be granted favorable terms.
The lawyer also requested that they be served with copies of witness statements and other documents that the prosecution will rely on.
The prosecution opposed their release on bail claiming that the
suspects have other associates from Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia.
Ruling on bond will be delivered on May 6, 2019 at 2pm
