NEMA officials issuing closing orders to a Hebatullah company Director

The National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) has started implementing the Rapid Results Initiative crackdown on environmental polluters by shutting down factories which flout environmental rules and regulations.

Among those temporary closed are Hebatullah Brothers Limited which is situated along North Airport Road , which was found our to have no evidence of effluent discharge analysis results, no evidence of tracking on waste while discharging effluent and acid into the sewer line and to the environment.

Some companies were issued with improvement notice on safety and environmental friendly safety.

The RRI exercise which was launched yesterday is part of the government’s effort to address issues of pollution and dumping.

NEMA has warned that polluters will be forced to close down until they comply and find ways to both meet production goals and environmental laws.

Yesterday during the launch of the RRI, NEMA Board Chairman Mr. John Konchellah said the main objective of the intervention is to enhance enforcement of the effluent discharge licensing regime.

Konchella said the increase in number of facilities with compliance to effluent discharge license (EDL), will improve efficiency in licensing process and most importantly create awareness on the need to comply with water quality regulations.
